Brett Meredith, CEO, Community Food Bank of Central Alabama

As Central Alabama’s largest hunger relief organization, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama distributes over 11 million nutritious meals through a network of 230 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and children’s programs annually. Meredith is well known for his strong leadership, significant experience running complex nonprofits, and ability to grow strategic community partnerships. The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is pleased to announce the appointment of Brett Meredith as Chief Executive Officer effective May 4, 2020.

Most recently, Brett served as Divisional Secretary for Business for The Salvation Army in Texas, where he was responsible for more than 20 employees, multiple departments, and budgets totaling more than $30 million including those for Disaster Responses. A strong leader known for his exceptional attention to detail, he has significant experience running complex nonprofits and establishing and growing strategic community partnerships.  Prior to his tenure in Dallas, Texas, he held the positions of Regional Commander in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Regional Commander in Hampton Roads, Virginia; Regional Commander in Kerrville, Texas; and Commander/Corps Officer in Dallas, Texas.

“Brett will bring an extraordinary level of skill, experience and energy to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama,” said David Wilson, Chair of The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama Board of Directors. “He is the ideal person to help us fully realize the Food Bank’s aspirations, vision, and engage the community in addressing food insecurity throughout Central Alabama.”

A native of Ohio, Meredith holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and is a graduate of the Arrow Executive Leadership Program.

“I’m honored to serve as Chief Executive Officer of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama,” said Meredith. “With over 80,000 children in central Alabama at-risk of hunger, I’m eager to join the Food Bank’s phenomenal staff to further its vital mission in serving the region. In partnership with such an innovative, generous community, I believe we can meet this challenge and develop groundbreaking ways to bring healthy foods to families in need in central Alabama.”

Launched in 1982 through a $100,000 grant from the Greater Birmingham Foundation and through the hard work of United Way volunteers, The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is a member of ‘Feeding America’ and the central clearinghouse for food and household goods earmarked to help hungry people in their greatest times of need.   The mission is to feed people in need today and foster collaborative solutions to end hunger tomorrow.  Serving a 12-county area and working in collaboration with over 230 agencies, the Food Bank is a vital resource to those who struggle with food insecurity. The Food Bank incubates social enterprises that promote nutrition, prevents wholesome food from going to waste and tests new initiatives that go beyond charity to create healthy food access for all.  An important lifeline for many, the Food Bank now distributes over 15 million pounds of food per year – a total that provides over 10 million meals to thousands of children, families and seniors in central Alabama annually.

Meredith was recruited as a part of a national search led by BoardWalk Consulting of Atlanta.  Boardwalk Consulting is a national executive search firm that specializes in recruiting CEOs and senior leaders for non-profits and foundations.
