Third Annual Governance Fellowships at Harvard
Governing for Nonprofit Excellence:
Critical Issues for Board Leadership,
November 8-11, 2006, Boston, MA

Governing for Nonprofit Excellence (GNE) is the program that Harvard Business School has designed for board chairs and other seasoned trustees destined to become significant board leaders in their respective nonprofit organizations. For the third year, BoardWalk Consulting is pleased to offer up to six fellowships for this compelling program.
Our selection criteria are straightforward, and we require just a simple email as a preliminary application. Previous recipients have called the experience "transformational."

(and bucking the trend)

Earlier this month, the FBI reported that violent crime in the US had risen by 2.5% last year, ending a five-year trend of decreasing crime rates nationwide. Many large cities saw double-digit increases in serious offenses, and last year's rise in the national crime rate was the highest since 1991.

Atlanta, however, was one of the bright spots. Bucking the national uptick, violent crime in Atlanta continued to decline another 9% last year. Rape in the city is now at its lowest rate since 1970, and the murder rate is at its lowest since 1963. Atlanmta appears to be on the way of realizing its commitment to becoming the safest city its size in America.

The lesson for nonprofits is essential: Committed individiuals and organizations, working in partnership, can make a difference....

Cal Darden named BoardWalk's BoardChampion for June

Shortly after the idea of the Atlanta Police Foundation was conceived in 2003 in conversations among Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington and a small group of supportive citizens, the founders knew that broad participation from Atlanta’s largest employers would be critical to the fopundation’s success. Cal Darden, then head of all U.S. operations for UPS, was approached for suggestions of a UPS executive who might be persuaded to join the new organization’s board.
After a few minutes of preliminary conversation, he had but one question: “Why not me?” In the foundation’s good fortune, it had stumbled unwittingly upon the one senior UPS executive with a lifelong interest in law enforcement....
